Has anyone tried the new Google "Chrome" browser? How does it stack up against what you have been using? I am particularly interested in hearing from those who use Explorer. From what I've read so far, it's no great advantage to Firefox or Opera users. If you have downloaded it into an Explorer-equipped computer, were there any conflicts?

Mudge,

I was very excited about Google's browser, but I've been told by my husband (a very computer-savvy guy) to NOT download it. He tells me it does not have the same privacy restrictions as other browsers, so they can potentially keep any and all information sent through their browser (this includes bank information and other sensitive material).
I would at least give it a few months and see what comes of this. If you really want to give it a whirl, I would suggest not using it when tranferring personal data.

Ali: I don't doubt your husband, but what is the source of his information? I've read about six articles regarding Google's browser, including a couple from respected computer magazines, and none mention any particular privacy vulnerability in that browser. Indeed, the consensus is that Explorer remains the most hackable browser there is.

I didn't ask his particular sources, but his information usually comes from message boards filled with other users.

Here is an article I just found and it looks like it came after users voiced their concerns: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9114369&intsrc=hm_list

I found a small blurb, off the same site, that showed up before Google decided to change anything: "Chrome, however, is not ready to take over the desktop world quite yet.
"The browser still has security problems. I'm not sure there will ever be a Web browser without security troubles, but Chrome seems to have more than I would have expected. Of course, it has been in the workshop for over two years, and this is its first visit to the real world. In addition, Chrome is open source, and security bugs tend to get squashed faster in open-source projects."

This site looks at security issues with Chrome as problems most new browsers have that will probably be worked out eventually: http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/150639/early_security_issues_tarnish_googles_chrome.html
It also has user comments underneath the article that may or may not be worth reading.

I am a big supporter of Google, although it seems they may soon take over the online world. I'm fine with that since their programs work well. Even so, I plan to let the early adopters continue their test drive before I delve into Google's world of Chrome.

I've heard the same thing about Chrome from a number of people who work on computer systems, both hardware and software. Their messages all begin "Don't!"
