Meaning: The only person I didn't see was John.
They sound archaic to me at best.

Most people would consider them to be simply wrong. The first may have had some currency hundreds of years ago, but nobody would use this kind of inversion today. ---------- Rich Turner (The Curmudgeon Himself)
