How do you call those students who extend the term of study (because they take one or two years off during their studies)? And how do you call those students who temporarily leave school and may return to school in one or two years? Are there any specific terms for these kinds of students? Thanks for your help in advance.

Sometimes they are called "students at large," although that usually means they are taking some coursework, but haven't yet committed to a specific program of study. If a student doesn't attend regularly but takes classes for a semester and drops out for a while, then returns to take a class or two and drops out again because of personal concerns or to make more money, we call that "continuing education."

Thanks a lot, CeeBee. How about those students who fail their courses and have to take one extra year to complete the program (baccalaureate or graduate programs)? Are they called "continuing students"?

No. They are on probation possibly -- "students on probation" -- or may be "students on a five-year plan." Earning a four-year degree in five years is no longer uncommon, maybe because of inability to pay tuition, because of illness, because courses have to be retaken or GPA improved, because of a change to a different major.

I agree with Cee Bee and just want to add that another reason many students don't finish a four-year degree in four years is that they can't take all the required classes in that time because of scheduling conflicts. This situation is so common that a special term is not really needed for it, but I've often heard such students called "a fifth-year senior."
