1-He spoke to me as father to son.
2-He spoke to me as a father to a son.
3-He spoke to me as a father does to a son.
4-He spoke to me as a father would to a son.

In which case:
a-He wasn't my father but spoke to me in the way a father would
and in which case:
b-He was my father and spoke to me in that capacity

Both interpretations are possible for all four instances. However, all sentences suggest that he is not my father but spoke to me as if he were my father or as a father would.

I've been pondering on how the sentence would read if "b-He was my father and spoke to me in that capacity." How about:

5-He spoke to me, father to son.
