Both interpretations are possible for all four instances. However, all sentences suggest that he is not my father but spoke to me as if he were my father or as a father would. ---------- Rich Turner (The Curmudgeon Himself)

I've been pondering on how the sentence would read if "b-He was my father and spoke to me in that capacity." How about: 5-He spoke to me, father to son.
