1-I didn't smoke again on the third night.

Can't sentence 1 have two meanings:

FIRST MEANING: I hadn't smoked on the first and the second night and on the third night, once again, I didn't smoke.

SECOND MEANING: I smoked on the first and the second night but I didn't smoke one more time on the third night.

You're absolutely right -- either of those meanings is possible. The sentence is a bit unlikely though.
