Barack Obama's (presumed) nomination as a candidate for president is an enormous step forward in the history of the USA. I couldn't be more pleased about it.

This country of mine, which has so often been seen as a beacon to the rest of the world, has terrible baggage in its past. Obama's journey is a wonderful symbol of what we can be.

I may comment on this later, Bradd, but I'm taking this opening to alert readers that our first poll for predicting the winner of the election is now online (click here). The answer choices also enable respondents to state their preference (or to say that they are still undecided). It presumes that Obama will be the Democratic nominee (I will withdraw the poll if this turns out to be not the case). My plan is to replace this early poll around the end of August with another in which people can offer new (or the same) predictions and preferences.

Of interest: In 2004, our completely unscientific poll was very close to reflecting the outcome.
