I have just added to my Links page a link to Sploofus, a wonderful site for playing trivia games. I highly recommend it. It's well designed, obviously the work of someone who has created a site just for the fun of it. A direct link to the site appears at the bottom of my home page. Once you register, you can spend hours exploring the quizzes and games (warning: it's addictive). You will also receive daily trivia questions with a count of points you have earned (I finally made it to Level 2). Even if that's all you do (it takes only a few minutes), it's worth it for the fun you'll have. This site is certainly one of the oases on the Net, which can sometimes look like a vast wasteland cluttered with commercialism and garbage. ---------- Rich Turner (The Curmudgeon Himself)

Congratulations, CeeBee. Only nine more correct answers will advance you to Level 2. We've both got a long way to go. I saw one guy listed at Level 41; of course, he has been with Sploofus since 2006. P.S. to all: Much as I avoid advertising, I've added a Sploofus link on the home page (scroll ALL the way to the bottom). ---------- Rich Turner (The Curmudgeon Himself)

If any more of you sign up, please use the link on the bottom of my homepage. If you get to Sploofus that way, I understand that I'll get bonus points. Like Bradd, I need a few billion to catch up with the leaders. By the way, my Sploofus screen name is themudge (what else?). ---------- Rich Turner (The Curmudgeon Himself)

Sorry, Rich, I signed up directly not realizing you would get 10,000 points for referrals from your site. I'm bradd there, btw.

Mudge, I tried to get onto Sploofus quickly by clicking on the link on your homepage, but it doesn't "click" for me. It is me, or is it the link?

Try it now, CeeBee. I think I messed up the code when I tried to edit something else. It should work now. P.S. to all: I originally said that Sploofus is ad-free. It is not, but the advertising is minimal. If you want ad-free access, you'll need to pay a $14.95 fee for six months. You won't want to do that unless you become a really serious Sploofer. ---------- Rich Turner (The Curmudgeon Himself)

Thanks, Mudge. It works now. Mudge, is this underlined sentence, "a direct link to the site appears at the bottom of my home page," in the first post of this thread supposed to take the reader to the home page? It doesn't.

No, CeeBee, that's not a link. Links should appear in color. I figure people can get to the home page easily enough by clicking on the index button on the left. ---------- Rich Turner (The Curmudgeon Himself)

Wouldn't it be kinda fun though, and even a little bit helpful, if a (new, or any) reader could click on that sentence and not have to look elsewhere for the link to get to the home page? In Libraryland, we do our best to make it easy for the patron to find things, even if he's never been to a library before. (Because of the blue background, the color difference is not real obvious between a link and just an underlined thing. I have to "hover" to find out.)

Good point. Part of the method in my madness in sending people to other places in my site is to encourage them to get to know more about the site itself, but I should make direct links more obvious and frequent. So, if people want to check out Sploofus, they can click anywhere on this sentence. If you get there by this route, however, and then register, I won't get any Sploofus bonus points unless you say themudge sent you. Sigh! I still have a gazillion points to get before I'm anywhere near the top 100. I'm continuing to have fun with Sploofus. Though I'm resisting (with varying success) the temptation to become an addict, I finally succumbed to the lure of Sploofus and paid to become a "Gold" member for six months so that I can play unlimited word games, not just one a week. I get some other benefits, but I haven't figured out exactly what they are. I've managed to reach Level 4 in the daily questions. I found out, by the way, that you can't "cheat" by googling for the answer to these when you don't know it. By the time you find it, time will have run out. Even when I miss, though, I am rewarded by acquiring a new piece of trivia because Sploofus obligingly tells me the answer after I've blown it. The trouble is that I never remember. Damned stupid, senile memory bank! Now where exactly is the Rainbow Bridge located? Ah, yes, it's Utah. I guessed Kentucky. That was today; by tomorrow, I will have forgotten. ---------- Rich Turner (The Curmudgeon Himself)

Rainbow Bridge - Arches National Park. Call me for help next time. Also, there's a "poem" Rainbow Bridge: Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... - Author unknown

CeeBee: By the time I called you and heard all this, the time for answering the question would surely have run out. I can see, however, why you're beating the pants off me at Sploofus – but just wait until I submit some word quizzes. (And here I thought that Rainbow Bridge was a card game played by leprechauns.) ---------- Rich Turner (The Curmudgeon Himself)

I fall apart in copious tears every time I read "Rainbow Bridge." You will never catch up to me at Sploofus, Mudge. I have a long list of trivia quizzes that I can submit.

Attention All Sploofers and Visitors to This Site: Never challenge CeeBee to a contest of knowledge. She has a copious mind, tightly packed with facts, which (it is rumored) she absorbs by osmosis at the library where she works. It is also rumored that she rarely sleeps and, even when she does, absorbs infornation by some sort of subliminal cognition. ---------- Rich Turner (The Curmudgeon Himself)

CeeBee, do you watch Jeopardy? Or play Trivial Pursuit? I love the first, when I can watch it. I've been disinvited to sessions of the second.

Pogo, me too. My niece banned me forever from Trivial Pursuit. She said I could only be moderator in the future or be in charge of the snacks. "Sharper than a serpent's tooth..."

Pogo, I do crossword puzzles and listen to my elders and work in a public library. P.S. Bradd received an Editor's Award for his newest Sploofus trivia quiz.

Rainbow Bridge IS in Utah, but it is NOT in Arches National Park. Rainbow Bridge is only a few miles north of the Utah-Arizona state line. It is near Lake Powell, northeast of Page, Arizona on the Navajo Reservation. Arches National Park is about 150 northeast of Rainbow Bridge. I have been to Arches several times. It is one of my favorite places. It is easily accessible. Rainbow Bridge is a bit hard to reach. It is most easily reached by boat from Lake Powell. You used to be able to get there by offroad vehicle through the reservation. You might need to have an official guide if you want to drive there now. I have photos of Arches on one of my websites. http://americanindian.net/utah2006.html I found this forum while searching for things about Sploofus. I have been a Sploofus player for a couple of years. Phil Konstantin (Sploofus name: Philkon)

Thanks, philkon. I haven't been to Arches for a number of years and, unlibrarianlike, didn't bother to check its location before I posted. I'm having tons of fun on Sploofus! I'm Cujgie there.
