A True Story
My wife, who works in the classified advertising department at a newspaper, told me about an incident that occurred today. It tickled me so much that I thought I'd pass it along.
For the fourth consecutive year, a gentleman came to the counter, wanting to place an "In Memoriam" notice for "Elizabeth (KC)." He always had little shamrocks in the notice because, he explained, "Elizabeth was Irish." When the ad counselor who helped him place the notice became a little teary over the moving words of the message, the gentleman asked, "You know who Elizabeth was, don't you?" "Why, no," the counselor replied, hesitant to make an assumption on such a sensitive matter. "Elizabeth was my cat," the man said, "The KC stands for 'Kitty Cat.'" But that's not the end of the story.
When the time came to bill the gentleman, the counselor noticed that the credit card he was using was in the name of "Elizabeth." "This credit card is in the name of your cat who has been dead for four years?" she asked. "Certainly," the man said, "If the credit card company wants to send a message saying that my cat has been pre-approved for a line of credit, I'm certainly going to take them up on it." He went on to explain that he has another cat now and that, if any bank wants to offer that cat a credit card, "I'll damn well take them up on that offer too."
Now here's a gentleman I wouldn't mind meeting.
