Be Brief
On Avoiding Needless Redundancy That You Don't Need

In my own personal opinion, I believe that a large number of students in the modern world of today write wordy and verbose essays due to the fact that, when it comes to writing, they are given instructions to have a certain number of words in the essays that they write.  As a direct consequence of this requirement that is given to them, they introduce into what they write lots of extra adjectives, adverbs, and modifiers that are not necessary, superfluous phrases that are redundant, and roundabout expressions that use more words than they actually need to get their points across.  In addition, they are also, more often than not, repetitious as well.

It goes without saying that, on account of having been employed as someone who edits what other people write, this author would never in a million years allow himself to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard without making every possible effort to do away with and eliminate all redundant or needless words.  To put it in the simplest possible terms available, when it comes to the act of writing, I make each and every effort that I can possibly make to try to be as concise and brief as is humanly possible.

I am fully aware of the fact that habits that have become ingrained by constant practice over the years cannot be done away with in an easy manner.  It takes more than a little and maybe a lot of effort for people who have become addicted to adding extra words in whatever they put into writing to begin to expunge or delete these needless words, let alone to recognize those instances in which they are repeating themselves or saying the same thing twice.

In actual practice, however, the people who are trying to read what we have written down have no desire to make their way through large amounts of verbiage in order to get the meaning of whatever it is that we are trying to say.  For that reason and no other reason, each and every person who writes anything at all has an obligation to express thoughts and ideas in the least number of possible words and should make every effort not to repeat thoughts and ideas over and over again.
