The North Bubble Trail
8 Oct 2005
The Bubbles, two rounded mountains near one end of Jordan Pond, are among the most photographed landmarks in Acadia, usually viewed from Jordan Pond House at the other end of the pond. However, climbing the Bubbles yields more spectacular pictures.
A trail, starting at the Park Loop Road, ascends the Bubbles, splitting after a short ascent into two trails – one leading to the South Bubble and another to the North Bubble. Because it leads to a balanced rock, the South Bubble is the more popular trail, but the North Bubble trail offers better views of the Pond and the nearby mountains.
The North Bubble trail is the location of "Jeremy's Journey," described elsewhere in a photo-essay and shown in the video with that title. This time, I climbed the North Bubble alone, and the following photos (except the first) are from that hike.

It's worth the effort - view from the summit
FACTOIDS: The North Bubble is 872 ft., the South Bubble 766 ft., making the summit of the latter exactly half as high as that of Cadillac (1,532 ft.), which is the highest peak in Acadia. Jordan Pond covers 187 acres. With a maximum depth of 150 ft., it is the deepest lake or pond in the park; a considerable amount of it is more than 100 ft. deep.
