"Hidden" Features

Although this site does not really contain any truly hidden features (our goal is to make everything easily accessible), some of the contents may be overlooked by the casual visitor.

A rather large segment (containing more photographs than any other section does) is devoted to Family.  Since these entries depart from the primary function of the site, visitors may skip them.  However, we feel that they have more than limited family interest and are worth at least a glance.  Contents range from pictorial essays to photo albums to videos.  Although the last are rather low resolution (because of space limitations), they represent an interesting (we think) combination of sounds and sights.  (A broadband connection is desirable for good results.)

Some sections have developed very slowly or have been neglected, but they should continue to grow.  Among these are:  Clippings, containing material imported from other sources; Wit and Wisdom, a collection of quotations;  Word Trivia, covering frequently asked questions about words; and Words, a list of interesting and useful words.  The last two are subsections of the Grammar, Words, and Usage section.  Also in this section is the ESL Notebook, which addresses English language issues that are particularly confusing to non-native speakers (though native speakers sometimes have trouble with them, too).*

Another neglected section is the Polls section.  We have not posted a new poll since our post-election poll in 2004, mainly because we haven't thought of any topics of general interest.  However, visitors may still participate in earlier surveys (including one asking for evaluations of this site).  Except for our election polls, we avoid surveys on politics, current events, and controversial issues because these are adequately covered by professional pollsters, who have the facilities to conduct more scientific polls.

As The Grammar Curmudgeon expanded, we realized that specific topics might become buried or hard to find.  Therefore, we added an Internal Site Search, powered by Google, which, if used according to the instructions on that page, permits visitors to search just this site by entering key words, phrases, or topics.  Spend a few minutes taking the Search for a spin; you may be surprised at what you find.

Finally, if you like this site, the page labeled Recommend This Site (bottom index button) gives you an easy way to e-mail your recommendation.

*One reason I tend to neglect this section is that many ESL questions are very specific and are covered on the ESL Message Board, which draws participants from all over the world.
