I'm, Like, Getting Tired of the Way You Talk, Y'know
14 Mar 2004

Do you ever listen to people whose conversation is punctuated with "like" and "y'know"?  Does it like drive you nuts, y'know?  It's scary to think about what goes on inside the heads of people who speak like this:  "Like my English professor, y'know, is like weird.  Like he talks funny, y'know.  It's like not English, like it's a foreign language, y'know."  Maybe nothing goes on; maybe their heads are just hair farms.  And what is just as scary is that some linguists are beginning to dignify such gross redundancies (and I use the word gross advisedly) as legitimate colloquialisms.  Come on, you pedantic buffoons – like and y'know are no more legitimate constructions when used in this manner than er, um, and uh are.
